Claire Walters took over as CEO of the WFCCU in 2008.
Why I joined:
Financial inclusion is my passion but I didn’t know much about credit
unions. When I learned more I knew I had to get involved!
Best bit about my job:
Being part of an organisation that helps people to get a handle on their
finances, sometimes for the first time in their lives and
helping long-term unemployed volunteers to get a job.
Who do you want to meet next?
Simon Wright joined the WFCCU in 2004 and became a volunteer Director in
2006. He was Chair until March 2011.
Why I joined:
I strongly believe that stopping people in Waltham Forest from having to
use loan sharks is a vitally important thing to do.
Best bit about my job:
The WFCCU is going from strength to strength and being in our new
premises has given us all a real boost.
Who do you want to meet next?
Lucy Folkes joined the WFCCU at the
beginning of 2009 and is an Accountant and Deputy CEO.
Why I joined:
I wanted to work somewhere where it's possible to make a
difference.
Best bit about my job:
Working with such a wide variety of people and seeing
volunteers gain confidence and skills then move on to paid employment.
Who do you want to meet next?
Joy Park has been volunteering daily with the WFCCU since it was first set up
and is a Director.
Why I joined:
I joined the WFCCU following an appeal from Lyn Brown who, at the time,
was with the Waltham Forest Social Justice Department. Lyn highlighted
the plight of people on low incomes who had to pay twice as much for the
things they needed because they couldn’t get affordable credit.
Best bit about my job:
Seeing someone who had nothing being able to build up their savings and
have a safe source of credit when they need it.
Who do you want to meet next?
Victoria Walker, Volunteer Manager has been with the WFCCU since
2008.
Why I joined:
I can be myself at the WFCCU and I’m constantly improving my skills. For
the first time in my career I have a boss who understands me, supports
me and cares enough to help me develop.
Best bit about my job:
The WFCCU is relaxed but professional, and our volunteers are happy
enough to want to stay, even when the government scheme they’re on comes
to an end. Watching our volunteers build confidence, learn new skills,
improve their English and gain employment is really satisfying.
It’s just a happy place to be.
Who do you want to meet next?
Polish-born Agnieszka Geremek has been with the WFCCU since 2009
and is now a volunteer Saturday Manager and Tresurer.
Why I joined:
I just wanted to gain some experience in finance.
Best bit about my job:
I love the great atmosphere and I'm working with some really nice
people. I’ve been able to develop my skills, gain the experience I
wanted, and everyone here is helping our community.
Who do you want to meet next?
Fatima Aref was a WFCCU volunteer for one year and has been
employed as a Loans Office since April 2010.
Why I joined:
I came to the WFCCU to gain experience and got lucky when a vacancy came
up. I applied and got it!
Best bit about my job:
Helping people to overcome their financial difficulties and steering
them towards financial stability.
Who do you want to meet next?
Barbara Handley has been a volunteer with the WFCCU since early
2009 and has a number of roles including Receptionist, Cashier, Filing
Clerk and Loans Administrator.
Why I joined:
I joined because of the work we do at the WFCCU.
Best bit about my job:
The best thing about working at the WFCCU is the happy staff.
